Linked Data in the Future Internet

Introduction and Terms of Reference

The Future Internet sparked the interest of many different communities. All of these communities develop specific parts of infrastructure, which at one point of time need to be able to interoperate. Unfortunately, currently the Future Internet architecture does not include means to achieve interoperability at a data level. At the same time Linked Data is becoming an accepted best practice to exchange information in an interoperable and reusable fashion. Many different communities on the Internet use Linked Data standards to provide and exchange interoperable information. This is strikingly confirmed by the dramatically growing Linked Data cloud ( and the currently more than 25 billion facts represented and interconnected therein with exponential growth rates both in terms of data sets and contained data. 

This session has three goals: (a) to inform everyone about the current state of the art in Linked Data and to motivate the use of Linked Data within the Future Internet; (b) to investigate current requirements of different communities active in the Future Internet and their use of Linked Data; and (c) to identify the next steps to make Linked Data useful and easy to use for the Future Internet Architecture.

The OSI/OSI 7-Layer architecture is a conceptual view on networking architectures. One possible view is a look at Linked Data as an independent layer in the Internet architecture, on top of the networking layer, but below the application layers, since it provides a common data model for all applications as shown in the figure below. This session investigates this view, what implications this imposes on the Future Internet Architecture, but also how future architectures and system developments can benefit from this new layer.

The session format

The Linked Data session at FIA Ghent is organised around three components. These components are: 

  1. Explanation and vision: This component will introduce the Linked Data concept to people working on other parts of the Internet Architecture.
  2. Interconnection: This component identifies interconnections between Linked Data and other parts of the Future Internet Architecture and its stakeholders. Input will be provided from the other FIA sessions and from invited experts. Talks are 10 min plus 5 min discussion.
  3. Community-building and next steps: This component aims at the planning of next steps and input preparation for the Future Internet Architecture.

The explanation and vision session consists primarily of invited talks. The interconnection sessions consists of shorter talks with time for discussion. The community-building component consists of a directed discussion with a number of proposals and identified action points.

A document entitled “Linked Data Manifesto” will collect input from relevant communities and present a coherent view on Linked Data as an Architectural Layer of the Future Internet.

Additionally, the session organisers will provide the opportunity to publish position papers outlining specific view and requirements in relation to Linked Data on a dedicated web space associated with the session.
